Juvenile blacktip reef sharks at Halaveli!

While walking along the shore at Halaveli there is a great chance to come across baby blacktip reef sharks swimming in the crystal clear waters.

Reaching up to half a meter in length, the adorable and harmless sharks can be found in confined water, where they often gather in groups. Juvenile sharks prefer to be in shallow waters where they are protected from predators and where they can find an abundance of food. They are traditionally very shy, but sometimes they can be intrigued by snorkelers and divers. Needless to say, the baby sharks are more afraid of us than we are of them.

Adult blacktip reef sharks are grow up to approximately 2 meters in length and can occasionally be seen by divers in the deeper waters of the Maldives. Having said that, encounters with adults are much rarer than with the juveniles that grace the lagoons at Halaveli!
