A dive not to be missed at Maayafushi: the check dive at Finolhu Faru

When you hear the words ‘check dive’ the first thing that may come into your mind is ‘boring’, ‘nothing to see’… At Maayafushi your ‘check dive’ could be the highlight of your diving experience in the Maldives as the dive site is amazing – with abundant marine life – and well worthy of being counted among the 10 best dives of the North Ari atoll.

Finolhu Faru is just a 20 minute boat ride from Maayafushi and starts with a sandy bottom that slowly drops from 5 to 20 meters, perfect as a starting descent, especially for divers who may not have used a regulator for a while and who want an easy start to regain familiarity with their equipment and their buoyancy.

A fantastic pinnacle, rising from 18 to 12 meters, appears out of the blue – covered with corals and full of fish life, including stone fish, moray eels, transparent shrimp and mantis shrimp. It is ideal for macro lovers! Recently during a dive, Marco Carè, our photographer and diving instructor at Maayafushi, found a beautiful shrimp hidden in a crinoid, which can be seen in the picture attached.

Once divers are fully relaxed and have regained their diving confidence, there is a wall full with beautiful overhangs offering the chance for divers to explore underneath and find a myriad of soldier fish and groupers having their gills cleaned by transparent shrimps. It is also worth keeping an eye into the blue for big fish action: tunas, giant trevallies, white tip reef sharks, grey reef sharks, stingrays and sometimes even mantas and mobulas.

Do not underestimate a ‘check dive’! After a dive at Finolhu Faru, divers often ask to go back!
