Coral gardening project at Maayafushi

In 2016 ‘El Nino’ – a periodical climate phenomenon causing a temporary warming in sea temperatures – caused a rapid coral bleaching episode in the Maldives. One of the consequences of this phenomenon has been the coral bleaching.

There are several projects to help restore and save the corals. One of the most widespread method coral gardening, which is both very easy and cost efficient. The concept consists of nursing a large number of coral fragments in a metal cage, then once they have grown, to transplant them on the damaged coral reefs.

With this project, the TGI Maldives’ team at Maayafushi wanted to contribute to the restoration of coral reefs and they all took part in the coral gardening.

More updates will follow as the coral grow!
