Fish ID: The Scorpionfish

You may have heard about the notorious scorpionfish before. It is a well-camouflaged predator that spends most of its time resting motionless on the reef, looking more like coral than a fish.

It has a fairly bad reputation due to the venomous spines that run down its back. These spines are a protective mechanism, only used when the scorpionfish feels threatened. That said, the scorpionfish is not dangerous as such, but like any other animal, it has developed its own ways of making it through the day in its environment that’s not all fun and games.

If you are an eagle-eyed diver and ever spot one, keep a safe distance and don’t provoke it – for your own good and to show respect to the marine life that makes diving and snorkelling in the Maldives unlike at any other place in the world.
