TGI Halaveli headlines: Manta mania!

This week it was Tobias’s turn to give some comforting proof to his family that we’re treating him well at TGI Halaveli and they can be at ease. After a great last day of diving together, they might even be secretly hoping their son is going to stay in the Maldives for a little while longer so they don’t have to go throug the whole ‘where to go on holiday’ dillema.

This week at TGI Halaveli: Heartened by romance and family visits

The diving’s again been good at TGI Halaveli this last week, although the sun’s been hiding for a couple of days and it’s been a bit dim underwater. But the island’s back on the bright side and so are the many couples that had beach shots taken, and especially Julia who has her family over!

Work hard play hard at TGI Halaveli

The week at TGI Halaveli kicked off with yet another rare sighting. Julia, our sharp-eyed instructor, spotted a master of camouflage, a leaf fish at Bodu Thila. The dive site is known for its spectacular cliffs and overhangs, and for its resident colony of gobies (in symbiosis with cleaner shrimps) which are interesting as they use their pelvic fins as a suction device so they can keep anchored to pieces of coral and withstand strong current. But nothing beats finding a scorpion fish family member!

The heat is still on at TGI Halaveli and the demand for chilling out underwater is on the boom, although guests who are seeking shade at the bar and sampling the refreshing cocktails that our barmen prepare so well, also can’t be blamed. Julia was entrusted with a serious responsibility – do an Open Water Course with the big boss of Halaveli Island,

Sukyu-badaibingu at TGI Halaveli

Sukyu-badaibingu at TGI Halaveli

It’s been a busy week at TGI Halaveli, mainly thanks to our Japanese guests. They shared with us the interesting stories of the famous abalone divers or ‘women of the sea’, although themselves decided to don scuba rather than free-diving gear and dive down to see a different kind of pearls. Rie (or Rie-San in Japanese) guided them on some great dives, and so did Aneel who’s still working hard toward completing his Divemaster course and brushing on his pronunciation of ‘sukyu-badaibingu’ (jap. scuba diving).

The heat is back on at TGI Halaveli

Divers are conventionally not very much bothered by rainy weather (you get wet anyway!), but the lack of sun for a couple of days made everyone at TGI Halaveli a bit grumpy. But it’s out again and it’s already hot. Maldivian hot! With high temperatures hitting the area, we’ve now been facing another issue: how to convince our guests that diving will help them cool off a bit. They don’t seem to find ‘cool off’ a good term to describe diving at 28°C…

TGI Halaveli. The dive center that never sleeps.

TGI Halaveli. The dive center that never sleeps.

Although it’s been a quiet week on the island, the staff at TGI Halaveli never sleeps.

This especially goes for Aneel whose Divemaster course has been kick-started. His stamina was put to the test already during the first exercise – tired diver – and, as evident in the picture, Aneel has realized that the Divemaster course is not all fun and games. According to the management, he’s not been given any extra requirements

Sharks mating – awesome video footage!

Sharks mating - awesome video footage!

Marco, the resident videographer at Halaveli certainly hit the jackpot this week as he captured some incredible footage of white tip reef sharks mating at Hafsa Thila in the North Ari Atoll, Maldives!

Sharks are quite aggressive in their mating rituals, with the male shark biting down on the side of the female. Male sharks have 2 ‘claspers’ that they then insert into the female. All of this amazing action is visible in the movie below!

Discover scuba diving at Halaveli!

Discover scuba diving at Halaveli!

This week has seen a number of guests take to the water for the first time, and undertake the PADI Discover Scuba Diving program.

With the first dive taking place in the shallow waters, students then have the chance to pursue subsequent dives to a maximum depth of 12 meters.

Tobias took two couple from Singapore out for the adventure, and it looks like they have really gotten the bug for diving as they
