Hammerhead encounter at Miyaru Kandu!

Flat calm sea, strong current, fairly good visibility… those were the conditions when last Sunday, during a dive at Miyaru Kandu, Enrico, our instructor and dive center manager at TGI Alimatha, slowly moved his fists in disbelief up to his ears – the international diving sign for a Hammerhead Shark sighting! Needless to say, Antonio and Federico were not looking at Enrico, instead, transfixed on the incredible Hammerhead.

The dive started as a regular one, with great shark action taking place in front of the group. Without warning, the Hammerhead appeared out of the blue, passing very close to the small group of diver before elegantly disappearing.

Thanks to the positioning of their eyes, mounted on the sides of the shark’s distinctive ‘hammerhead’ design, and their sensory organs on the head, the sharks can easily identify their prey. They are usually solitary creatures, but can occasionally be seen in larger schools.
