Amazing harlequin shrimp encounter!

Amazing harlequin shrimp encounter!

While getting ready to leave for the morning 2-tank dive boat, divers at Halaveli did not know they would be in for such an unexpected encounter underwater!

During the dive on Bathala Thila, one of our favourite dive sites, guest Emanuela and our diving instructor Adriano discovered a harlequin shrimp hiding in the reef, a very rare find in the Maldives!

Harlequin shrimp normally live together as a couple and feed almost exclusively on starfish, using their large claws to detach starfish limbs! As these creatures are very small, up to 5 cm in length, they are not easy to spot, and with the help of their irregular purple and red blotches on a creamy background they are very well camouflaged, almost disappearing into the background.

A special thanks to Emanuela for the great picture!
