Macro lovers’ ideal sites in the Maldives

Macro lovers' ideal sites in the Maldives

The turquoise waters surrounding the Maldives are well known for their abundant marine life and big fish encounters such as sharks, manta rays and turtles… but these waters are also a paradise for macro lovers!

Ari Atoll is a macro lovers dream! The past few months have seen guests and the TGI Maldives’ team from Maayafushi and Halaveli rushing for their cameras to capture images of frog fish, harlequin shrimp, ghost pipefish and nudibranch!

Bathala Thila, a small thila located east of Bathala Island, in the middle of Ari Atoll, offers a stunning reef and an abundance of small fish that love the safe sanctuary of the reef. We already knew that nudibranchs could be spotted here, and this year one of our guests found an amazing harlequin shrimp hiding in the reef…

Maaya Thila, located in the North Ari Atoll, is easily accessible from our centers at Maayafushi and Halaveli. This thila is the perfect spot for macro lovers as it features numerous species of nudibranchs. These little creatures are difficult to find and are keeping our instructors on their toes!

The Arch, also located in the North Ari Atoll, has recently been discovered. It is another beautiful reef, home to nudibranchs and flatworms, that can be found under the arch, a natural passage carved into the thila.
