Maha Thila

Maha Thila at Helengeli Island

Boat trip: 20 min
Reef type: thila
Level: beginner to advanced
Depth: 5-30m

Maha Thila is situated west of Helengeli and is one of the liveliest sites of the area. This thila is relatively small and can be dived all the way around. It is a reef with many sides: a beautiful plateau, a steep slope opposite to a gentle slope. One side is overgrown with hard corals and gorgeous black corals. Some parts of the reef are inhabited by glass fish and little sardines. Overhangs encourage curiosity and invite you in. The plateau is also home to octopus and anemones of different colours and has a colourful array of reef fish. The sharp-eyed diver can spot scorpion fish, stone fish and frog fish attempting to conceal themselves. A nice pink anemone at 15 meters, gives colour to the reef. Mackerels get close by and it’s common to meet friendly turtles or whitetip reef sharks. Maha Thila, a site full of life that you shouldn’t miss.
