Night snorkeling on Maayafushi housereef

Night snorkeling on Maayafushi housereef

Snorkelling in the day, ocean lovers are spoiled with a great variety of colourful fishes and reef. At night snorkellers also enjoy a spectacular show and a total change of scene, with marine life that would rarely seen during the day.

At dusk most of the day inhabitants of the reef, such as parrotfish, nestle in cracks and cavities of the reef to protect themselves from predators. Indeed predators are more active at night than during daytime, and you may encounter moray eels, lion fish, octopus and lobsters. In addition, other creatures also come out at night: red pencil urchins, cowries and crinoids.

And what you probably wouldn’t expect are the magnigicient colourful corals! During the day, they are closed up, and hardly resemble something alive. But at night they can transform into living animals, blooming out in stunning colors, feeding with their little tentacle bodies.
