Snorkel tips from TGI Maldives

Snorkelling on the amazing coral reefs, and enjoying all of the incredible marine life is a big highlight of many people during their Maldives holiday. We have put together 3 useful tips to make sure you are able to make the most out of your snorkel experiences on your next visit with TGI Maldives.

1. Use a mask that fits
Whilst it is an obvious one, it is important. Having a mask that fits comfortably will make the difference between having an amazing time, seeing lots of fish, and spending most of the time with your head out of the water, trying to stop your mask flooding. Your mask should fit comfortably on your face – without the strap needing to be too tight. When you breathe in through your nose, it should cause an airtight seal to form. It is important to remember that all masks can leak sometimes, so you should also be comfortable clearing your mask (letting the water out), and should practice this when you first start out.

2. Wear fins
Fins are amazing. Once you have learnt to swim in fins you will quickly realize how much of a better swimmer they make you. The Maldives is known for its currents, and this includes in shallow lagoon areas too, so having that extra bit of power when snorkelling is important. Whilst you should never snorkel in a strong current, even in “easy” conditions having fins on can make the difference between a relaxing snorkel and a work-out.

3. Sun Protection
Hopefully, during your time in the Maldives, you will get lots of sunshine. When snorkelling it is easy to forget how long you are out exposed to the sun, and even though you are in the water you can and will still burn. Because of these we always recommend that snorkellers use either a strong, water-proof sunblock especially on areas which don’t often see the sun, like the back of your legs. Or wear UV protective clothing like rash guards, and shorts.
