Turtle rescue at Maayafushi

Turtle rescue at Maayafushi

In recent decades, marine and terrestrial species have been increasingly threatened. Luckily, in parallel to this phenomenon, awareness towards the protection of the environment and its inhabitants has also grown. For instance, there are now more conservation programs in charge of the protection and the study of threatened species.

Last week, an olive ridley turtle was stranded in Maayafushi lagoon. The turtle looked bad: carried by currents to Maayafushi, it was unable to dive and had lost a lot of weight.

The TGI Maldives’ team at Maayafushi decided to look after the turtle and contacted a specialized turtle rescue center for assistance. During two days, the creature was been pampered and thoroughly looked after from both the TGI Maldives’ team and Maayafushi Resort team.

The brave male specimen, named Leo, has now been transported to a turtle rehabilitation center, the Marine Savers at Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa. This center is one of many centers in the Maldives in charge of turtles protection – these sweet creatures that have been swimming in our oceans for over 200 million years…

We hope that this happy ending fairytale will also encourage you to protect the environment and its inhabitants.
